This is what Republicans want to let Trump do at least until the midterms:
"The European Union, one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States, has just put a nasty 50% Tariff on Whisky," Trump wrote. "If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES. This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S."
It’s not so much the tariffs as it is allowing him to completely alienate every country in the world against us.

And the only explanation why is that Republicans agree with him.

I remember a Vonnegut story set in a future where the countries of the world had Balkanized America so it could no longer be a threat to world order (it was the Vietnam era).  We seem hellbent on doing that to ourselves, so that we are no longer effective on the world stage. Or, some say, worse:
Ray Dalio is right—the U.S. is on the edge of a debt crisis.

Debt-to-GDP just hit 122%, and the world is done buying U.S. debt. When buyers pull back or demand higher rates, borrowing collapses.

Debt restructuring, political pressure, cutting payments—this isn’t a warning. It’s imminent.
All because we had to give the toddler the shotgun, again. It would be even more ironic if we did it over the price of eggs.

Funny how “nobody could have predicted,” and yet, they did.
