Cannot Bear Very Much Reality



 T.S. Eliot visited his hometown of St.Louis in 1953 and admitted to the press that he had guarded hope for civilization. He’d seen two world wars and the Korean War, and the “Cold War” was raging. You only have to read Le Carre’s Smiley novels to feel you’d be uncertain about civilization if the Cold War was your only frame of reference.

So, did Eliot know something we don’t, or do we know something he didn’t.

Or did civilization end in the interim and we haven’t noticed yet?
