I’m sure this sounded terribly clever in his head, but in 2020 Trump WAS the President. He wasn’t just a candidate.It seems too-often overlooked, in the 1/6 story, that Trump wasn't acting in his institutional role as President. His conduct was always about using his Presidential powers and his political influence to help him solely in his capacity as a political *candidate.*

A mere candidate has no “Presidential powers” to use. A President always has “political influence.”
