McConnell lied in his now famous speech, and I consider it a “tell” about his intent. He said the House held the article of impeachment until after the inauguration.Nice words from McConnell but he didn’t acknowledge Biden won until Dec.14, didn’t denounce Trump’s lies until Jan.3, after it could no longer roil the GA senate races, & recessed the Senate before claiming this unfortunately prevented conviction. https://t.co/kAfZ9xPnPM

In fact, McConnell sent the Senate into recess while the House voted on the article. The Senate Sergeant at arms told the House that if the article was delivered while the Senate was in recess, it would be refused. He played the game to protect Trump, but declares he is against Trump. He wants to lead the party, but he knows the base of the party is Trump. He wants, in other words, to eat his cake and have it, too. Mostly he wants the Senate back, and already he’s talking about “electability.”
I’m old enough to remember when that was all the Democrats talked about, and how it worked out for them. That’s one reason Trump won: he was not “electable,” and Clinton was. McConnell is going to have to do better. The problem is, he can’t.
The GOP rode this tiger; now it’s going to eat them. Right down to the shoes.
